Product Overview

Aluminium Oxide Active Basic For Column Chromatography (CAS No. 1344-28-1) is an activated alumina adsorbent with basic surface characteristics, developed for normal-phase chromatographic separation. Its porous aluminium oxide structure contains surface hydroxyl groups and adsorption sites that interact differently with mixture components according to polarity, molecular functionality, and acid–base character. This surface chemistry gives basic alumina distinctive selectivity for compatible basic and neutral substances.

The active basic chromatographic form is intended for preparative column separation, purification of reaction mixtures, and adsorptive sample clean-up. It is particularly suited to basic and neutral compounds that remain stable under alkaline conditions, including selected alkaloids, alcohols, hydrocarbons, steroids, and natural pigments. Because activated basic alumina may promote surface-catalysed reactions in susceptible substances, analyte and mobile-phase compatibility should be assessed during method development.

Typical Applications

  • Stationary adsorbent for normal-phase column chromatography
  • Separation and purification of basic organic compounds
  • Isolation and fractionation of suitable alkaloids
  • Chromatographic separation of alcohols and hydrocarbons
  • Purification and fractionation of steroidal compounds
  • Separation of compatible natural pigments
  • Adsorptive clean-up of reaction mixtures and laboratory samples
  • Development and optimisation of alumina-based preparative separation methods

Basic alumina is established for chromatographic treatment of alkaline-stable basic and neutral compounds and for separations involving alcohols, hydrocarbons, steroids, alkaloids, and natural pigments.

Storage Conditions

Store in a tightly closed container in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated location. Protect the material from atmospheric moisture, solvent vapours, dust, and other contaminants. Since water adsorption can alter the activity and chromatographic behaviour of activated alumina, minimise exposure during dispensing and reseal the container promptly after use. Preserve the material according to any activity or moisture requirements stated in the approved product specification.
