Product Description

Detailed information about the product

Product Overview

Chloroform 99% For Synthesis (CAS No. 67-66-3) is trichloromethane, a chlorinated one-carbon solvent containing three chlorine atoms bonded to a single carbon centre. Its high polarisability, limited water miscibility and ability to dissolve many hydrophobic organic substances make it useful in extraction and reaction systems. Under strongly basic conditions, chloroform can also serve as a precursor to dichlorocarbene.

The Synthesis grade is intended for preparative organic chemistry, reaction work-up and extraction procedures requiring a chlorinated solvent of defined catalogue purity. It is suitable for all the general reaction and separation work in the laboratories.

Typical Applications

  • Reaction solvent and processing medium in preparative organic chemistry.
  • Liquid–liquid extraction of hydrophobic organic compounds from aqueous mixtures.
  • Reaction work-up, washing and phase-separation procedures.
  • Generation of dichlorocarbene under suitable strongly basic conditions.
  • Reimer–Tiemann-type formylation and related dichlorocarbene chemistry.
  • Solvent for dissolution and recrystallisation studies involving compatible organic compounds.

Common Synonyms

  • Trichloromethane
  • Methane Trichloride
  • Methyl Trichloride
  • Trichloroform
  • Chloroform

Storage Conditions

Store in a tightly closed container protected from direct light, excessive heat, prolonged air exposure, evaporation and contamination. Minimise unnecessary opening to preserve solvent composition and limit gradual degradation.
