Product Overview

Dextrose Anhydrous AR/ACS (CAS No. 50-99-7) is an optically active, reducing aldohexose containing multiple hydroxyl groups and a hemiacetal functionality in its predominant cyclic forms. In aqueous solution, D-glucose reversibly interconverts between its α- and β-anomers, producing the characteristic change in optical rotation known as mutarotation. Its reducing properties arise from equilibrium with an open-chain aldehyde form, which underpins established chemical and biochemical glucose determination methods.

The AR/ACS grade is intended for analytical reagent preparation, conventional carbohydrate analysis and bacteriological laboratory procedures requiring controlled glucose reagent quality. It is useful for preparing solutions for polarimetric investigations, reducing-sugar determinations and analytical method studies. Suitable for bacteriology, it also serves as a fermentable carbohydrate component in bacterial culture media and carbohydrate-utilisation test systems, where microbial metabolism of glucose can be assessed through acid formation and related biochemical responses.

Typical Applications

  • Preparation of glucose solutions for polarimetric analysis
  • Conventional determination of reducing sugars using copper-reduction methods
  • Analytical investigations involving glucose mutarotation and optical rotation
  • Preparation of glucose working solutions for analytical reagent procedures
  • Use as a fermentable carbohydrate in bacteriological culture media
  • Preparation of glucose-containing media for bacterial fermentation studies
  • Carbohydrate-utilisation tests examining acid production by bacterial cultures
