Detailed information about the product

Product Overview

Formaldehyde Solution 37% Extra Pure (CAS No. 50-00-0) is a concentrated aqueous formaldehyde preparation in which methanal exists predominantly as hydrated and short-chain oligomeric species in dynamic equilibrium. The carbonyl-derived functionality reacts readily with amines, phenols, alcohols and other nucleophiles, enabling methylene-bridge formation, acetalisation and condensation. The stated concentration defines the supplied solution form and its reactive formaldehyde content.

The Extra Pure grade is intended for preparative chemistry, resin development and laboratory formulation. It is useful in phenolic, amino-resin and polymer crosslinking studies, preparation of formaldehyde derivatives and controlled modification of amine- or hydroxyl-containing materials. The aqueous form permits direct incorporation into water-compatible reaction systems and investigations of carbonyl reactivity.

Typical Applications

  • Preparation of phenol–formaldehyde resin systems
  • Preparation of urea– and melamine–formaldehyde resins
  • Crosslinking of amine-containing polymers and materials
  • Acetal and formal derivative synthesis
  • Preparation of methylene-bridged organic intermediates
  • Surface and fibre modification research
  • Investigation of aqueous formaldehyde reaction chemistry

Common Synonyms

  • Formalin 37%
  • Formaldehyde aqueous solution
  • Methanal solution
  • Formic aldehyde solution
  • Methyl aldehyde solution
  • Formalin solution

Storage Conditions

Keep tightly closed and protect from evaporation, excessive heat, contamination and conditions that promote polymer formation. Inspect before use for cloudiness, precipitation or concentration change and maintain the solution in a homogeneous condition.
