Product Overview

N,N-Diethyl-p-phenylenediamine Sulphate 99% AR (CAS No. 6283-63-2) is the sulphate salt of N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine, an aromatic amine derivative containing a para-amino group and a diethylamino substituent on the benzene ring. Its readily oxidisable aromatic diamine functionality enables formation of intensely coloured oxidation products, making the compound particularly useful as a chromogenic reagent in analytical chemistry. In aqueous analytical systems, oxidation of the DPD species produces a characteristic coloured form whose intensity can be related to the amount of oxidising species present.

The AR grade is suited to reagent preparation and established analytical procedures requiring N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine in a defined sulphate-salt form. Its principal analytical importance is as the DPD reagent used for colorimetric determination of free and total chlorine in water; ISO 7393-2 specifies a colorimetric method based on the red DPD colour complex, applicable to laboratory and field testing. The reagent is also employed in spectrophotometric procedures for selected pharmaceutical compounds containing phenolic or aromatic-amino functionalities, where oxidative coupling produces measurable coloured products.

Typical Applications

  • Colorimetric determination of free chlorine in drinking water and other aqueous samples by the DPD method.
  • Colorimetric determination of total chlorine residuals in water-treatment and water-quality analysis.
  • Preparation of DPD reagent systems for routine laboratory and field-based residual-chlorine testing.
  • Spectrophotometric determination of selected phenolic pharmaceutical compounds, including salbutamol, ritodrine and isoxsuprine.
  • Spectrophotometric determination of selected aromatic-amino pharmaceutical compounds, including dapsone, sulfamethoxazole and sulfadiazine.
  • Preparation of analytical reagent solutions for oxidative colour-development procedures.
  • Analytical research involving oxidative coupling of aromatic amines to generate measurable coloured products.

Storage Conditions

Store tightly closed and protected from excessive moisture, heat and unnecessary exposure to air or other conditions that may promote oxidation or deterioration of the aromatic amine reagent. Keep the material protected from contamination and promptly reseal the container after dispensing so that its suitability for subsequent analytical colour-development procedures is preserved.
