Product Description

Detailed information about the product

Product Overview

N,N-Dimethyl Formamide 99% For Synthesis (CAS No. 68-12-2) is a highly polar aprotic tertiary formamide commonly abbreviated DMF. Resonance delocalisation across the amide group gives the molecule strong dipolar character and effective solvating power for many organic compounds, polymers, salts and polar intermediates. In addition to its role as a solvent, DMF can participate as a formyl, carbonyl or dimethylamino source in appropriately activated synthetic systems.

The Synthesis grade is intended for preparative organic chemistry, catalysis, polymer processing and reaction development requiring a high-boiling polar medium. It supports substitution, coupling, condensation and activated-DMF transformations.

Typical Applications

  • Polar aprotic reaction medium for substitution, coupling and condensation reactions.
  • Component in Vilsmeier-type formylation and cyclisation systems.
  • Solvent for metal salts, catalysts and strongly polar reaction intermediates.
  • Dissolution and processing of polyacrylonitrile, polyurethanes and compatible polymers.
  • Preparation of membranes, coatings, fibres and polymer solutions.
  • Reaction medium or reagent source in method-specific carbonylation, activation and heterocycle-forming chemistry.

Common Synonyms

  • N,N-Dimethylformamide
  • Dimethylformamide
  • Dimethyl Formamide
  • N,N-Dimethylmethanamide
  • N-Formyldimethylamine
  • Formic Acid Dimethylamide
  • DMF

Storage Conditions

Store in a tightly closed container protected from humid air, excessive heat and contamination. DMF is hygroscopic; minimise opening and use clean, dry dispensing practices to preserve solvent composition, water content and consistency in synthesis and polymer-processing procedures.
