Product Overview

Potassium Hydroxide Powder 85% Extra Pure (CAS No. 1310-58-3) is potassium hydroxide supplied as a powdered solid at the stated assay. Chemically it is the same strong potassium base represented by other physical forms, but the finely divided form provides greater exposed surface area and therefore can respond rapidly to atmospheric moisture and carbon dioxide. Potassium hydroxide supplies hydroxide ions for neutralisation, hydrolysis and strongly alkaline reaction conditions.

The Extra Pure grade is intended for general preparative laboratory use where a readily dispersible or rapidly dissolving solid base is convenient. The powder form may facilitate mixing with other solids or rapid preparation of alkaline solutions, but no difference in intrinsic chemical identity or purity mechanism is inferred from the physical form.

Typical Applications

  • Rapid preparation of aqueous potassium hydroxide solutions.
  • Base-promoted organic synthesis and hydrolysis.
  • Neutralisation and pH adjustment in laboratory preparations.
  • Mixing with suitable solid reagents in preparative chemistry.
  • Alkaline treatment or digestion of suitable laboratory samples.
  • General reaction development requiring a finely divided strong base.

Common Synonyms

  • Caustic potash
  • Potash lye
  • Potassium hydrate
  • Potassium hydroxide
  • Caustic potassium

Storage Conditions

Store tightly sealed and minimise exposure to air, as the high surface area of the powder increases susceptibility to moisture uptake and atmospheric carbon dioxide. Promptly reseal after dispensing to limit caking, carbonate formation and changes in effective hydroxide concentration.
