Product Overview

Potassium Nitrite 95% Extra Pure (CAS No. 7758-09-0) is the potassium salt of nitrous acid and provides nitrite ions containing nitrogen in the +3 oxidation state. Nitrite exhibits both reducing and oxidising behaviour depending on reaction partners and conditions and can participate in nitrosation, diazotisation and inorganic redox chemistry. Its intermediate nitrogen oxidation state distinguishes its reactivity clearly from potassium nitrate.

The Extra Pure grade is intended for preparative synthesis, nitrite reagent preparation and general research requiring a soluble nitrite source.

Typical Applications

  • Nitrite source in preparative inorganic and organic chemistry.
  • Diazotisation reactions of suitable primary aromatic amines.
  • Nitrosation chemistry where inorganic nitrite is methodologically appropriate.
  • Preparation of nitrite-containing reaction and reagent solutions.
  • Redox studies involving intermediate nitrogen oxidation states.
  • General investigation of nitrite reaction kinetics and transformation chemistry.

Common Synonyms

  • Nitrous acid potassium salt
  • Potassium nitrite(III)

Storage Conditions

Keep tightly closed, dry and protected from prolonged exposure to atmospheric moisture and reactive contamination. Prevent contact contamination by strong oxidising or reducing substances so that nitrite composition and redox behaviour are not altered during storage.
