Product Overview

Sucrose AR/ACS (CAS No. 57-50-1) is an optically active disaccharide consisting of α-D-glucopyranose and β-D-fructofuranose residues linked through their anomeric centres. The resulting glycosidic structure gives sucrose its non-reducing character, while its aqueous solubility and characteristic positive optical rotation are particularly relevant to analytical investigations of carbohydrate composition. Hydrolysis produces glucose and fructose, changing the reducing-sugar behaviour and optical rotation of the resulting solution.

The AR/ACS grade is intended for conventional analytical chemistry, laboratory quality control and physicochemical measurements requiring a high-purity sucrose reagent. It is useful in preparing defined aqueous solutions for polarimetric and refractometric investigations, as well as in analytical procedures examining carbohydrate hydrolysis, optical rotation and reducing-sugar formation. Sucrose also provides a well-characterised analyte for evaluating analytical response and reproducibility in suitable wet-chemical and optical methods.

Typical Applications

  • Preparation of sucrose solutions for polarimetric analysis and optical-rotation studies
  • Refractometric investigations involving aqueous sugar concentrations
  • Analytical studies of sucrose hydrolysis and optical inversion
  • Determination of reducing sugars formed after controlled sucrose hydrolysis
  • Preparation of defined carbohydrate solutions for analytical method evaluation
  • Laboratory quality-control studies involving sugar concentration and solution properties
  • Conventional wet-chemical investigations of non-reducing and reducing carbohydrates

Common Synonyms

  • Saccharose
  • D-(+)-Sucrose
  • D-(+)-Saccharose
  • α-D-Glucopyranosyl β-D-fructofuranoside
  • β-D-Fructofuranosyl α-D-glucopyranoside

Storage Conditions

Store tightly closed in a dry place, protected from moisture, excessive heat and contamination. Reseal the container immediately after dispensing to maintain the reagent's suitability for analytical solution preparation.
