Product Overview

Sucrose For Molecular Biology (CAS No. 57-50-1) is a water-soluble, non-reducing disaccharide formed from glucose and fructose through an α,β-1,2-glycosidic bond. Its high aqueous solubility permits the preparation of solutions with progressively increasing density and osmotic strength, properties widely exploited in biological fractionation and the handling of cellular components. As an uncharged carbohydrate, sucrose is particularly useful for establishing density differences in aqueous media without introducing additional ionic species.

The Molecular Biology grade is intended for the preparation of sucrose-containing media used in biomolecular separation, purification and sample handling. Sucrose density gradients and cushions are employed during centrifugation to fractionate ribosomes, polysomes, membrane-associated complexes, organelles and other biological particles according to their sedimentation behaviour. It also serves as an osmotic component of suitable cell-homogenisation and organelle-isolation buffers, supporting controlled sample preparation where solution density and osmotic conditions are important.

Typical Applications

  • Preparation of sucrose density gradients for biological ultracentrifugation
  • Preparation of sucrose cushions for ribosome and polysome isolation
  • Fractionation of cellular organelles and membrane-associated components
  • Separation and enrichment of biological particles and macromolecular complexes
  • Preparation of osmotic support buffers for cell homogenisation
  • Use in organelle-isolation and subcellular fractionation procedures
  • Preparation of sucrose-containing buffers for biomolecular sample handling

Common Synonyms

  • Saccharose
  • D-(+)-Sucrose
  • D-(+)-Saccharose
  • α-D-Glucopyranosyl β-D-fructofuranoside
  • β-D-Fructofuranosyl α-D-glucopyranoside

Storage Conditions

Store tightly closed in a cool, dry place and protect from moisture and contamination. Use clean, dry dispensing equipment and reseal the container promptly to preserve reagent quality for sensitive molecular-biology preparations.
